Dehydrated raw foods are not a new concept in the pet industry, however within recent years, the demand for these products has exploded. What began as a small, niche subcategory of pet food, is now a booming marketplace with many brands big and small vying to be the king of the dehydrated raw pet food castle.
Currently, the dehydrated pet food market is valued at $8.9-Billion USD and is projected to reach $14.2-Billion USD in ten years.
Dehydrated raw dog foods are ideal for pet owners seeking the highest quality diets for their dogs. Frozen raw diets have consistently been a very popular choice, however considering the hassles that come with storing, thawing, and handling frozen raw ingredients, dehydrated raw foods became a highly sought after alternative for their convenience among other things like variety, palatability, and product safety.
Due to the fact that dehydrated raw foods often come at a higher price point compared to other popular pet food types (like dry/kibble and canned/wet foods) they’re not always an affordable long term option – especially for large dogs. DRF’s are highly versatile products with many possible uses. Resultantly, pet owners on a budget often choose to feed DRF’s as a food topper or a treat, as a complement to a complete and balanced commercial kibble or canned food. DRF’s are also a popular mouth-watering option as training treats as most dehydrated foods are either the ideal portion size for quick rewards or can be easily broken into smaller pieces.
What’s the Difference Between Air Dried and Freeze Dried Raw Dog Food?
These ultra-premium diets are primarily produced using two methods: air drying, and freeze drying. Air drying involves circulating warm, dry air around the food to slowly remove moisture. The temperature is typically kept low (often below the boiling point of water) to retain optimal nutrient content. Freeze-drying, on the other hand, involves rapidly freezing the food and then placing it in a vacuum chamber to remove moisture via a process called sublimation (where ice transitions directly to vapour without going through the liquid phase). Freeze-drying has a very high degree of nutritional retention as it preserves virtually all the nutrients, enzymes, and proteins present in raw ingredients.
Both of these dehydration methods result in an exceptionally high quality, shelf-stable product that is not only highly digestible, but extremely palatable!

CaniSource
Based out of Quebec since 2005, the Canisource brand’s premium “Grand Cru” line features six incredible dehydrated raw dog food recipes: Surf and Turf, Fish, Turkey, Pork and Lamb, Chicken and Duck, and Red Meat. Their meats are carefully chosen, and processed in an HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) certified plant. HACCP is unique because it proactively identifies and controls potential hazards in the production process, ensuring food safety through systematic prevention rather than end-product inspection.
All Grand Cru recipes are purposely designed by industry-leading nutritionists and prepared by hand with their team of professionals. Careful attention to quality is given to all of Grand Cru’s ingredients as they are all approved for human consumption. Meats, fresh fruits and vegetables are chopped down to a fine texture, then mixed with spices and wholegrain cereals to create the final mixture. From there, each batch is cut into small sections to form the final kibble-like shape before being air dried.
Every batch of Grand Cru is dehydrated over several hours at ultra low temperatures, which destroys bad bacteria while also preserving the naturally occurring nutrients contained in their raw ingredients.

What do u consider as top 2 senior dog foods for Large breeds?
Hello, Deborah. Thank you for posting your question.
Finding the right diet for senior dogs can vary widely on a number of factors: age, weight, activity level, overall health, etc. Senior-specific dog foods are typically lower in calories and higher in fibre compared to most adult-specific dog foods, largely due to the fact that older dogs are more likely to be less active and more prone to unwanted weight gain. However, if you have senior dogs that are not overweight and in good overall health, you don’t necessarily need to purchase a senior-specific dog food – this is where all-life-stage diets come in. These diets are formulated to be suitable for dogs of all ages and activity levels; you simply feed the correct amount for age and activity level (found on the product feeding guide). With that said, all of the brands on this list are suitable for senior dogs (as they are all-life-stage diets), providing there are no health issues that require a specific diet. Even if your senior dogs are overweight, the products included on this page are among the absolute best in the industry.
If you are looking for a more specific recommendation please provide as much detail as you can with regards to your dogs’ age, weight, breed, and overall health profile. The more information I have, the better I can help.
I hope this information is helpful, Deborah. Please let me know if you have any further questions.
