Feeding your pet a high quality pet food is essential for their overall wellbeing. However, with the cost of living steadily on the rise, affordability is now more important than ever. To many pet owners, finding a high quality, affordable dog food can oftentimes seem unattainable. Thankfully, there are plenty of excellent Canadian-made options to consider!
Here are the top three thing to look for in a high quality, affordable dog food:
Made in Canada Matters
Domestically manufactured foods have less distance to travel before reaching your home, which can make them more affordable for Canadian pet owners. This is a big win for pet owners’ pocketbooks, and the environment, as well.
Look For Common Ingredients
With the prevalence of dietary allergies, sensitivities, and intolerances among dogs in Canada, more and more pet food manufacturers are adding unique meat alternatives to their product lineups. Also known as novel proteins, these offerings often include rabbit, venison, kangaroo, crickets, black soldier flies, and even beaver. These proteins are favourable for pets suffering from dietary issues caused by more common meats, but unfortunately they also come at a much higher price point. Providing your pooch does not have dietary restrictions, common meats like chicken and certain varieties of fish will always be among the most affordable.
Grain Inclusion May Help to Bring Down Cost
Meat inclusion is the biggest factor dictating the price of dog foods; the higher the meat content, the more expensive the pet food. Grain-free pet foods are commonly more expensive than their grain-friendly counterparts, largely due to the higher meat inclusion.
Unlike wolves, domesticated canines are omnivores and have evolved to readily digest animal and plant-based foods. High quality, grain-inclusive dog foods provide optimal nutrition at a much more affordable price compared to grain-free alternatives.
What Are The Most Affordable Dog Foods in Canada in 2025?

Other healthy ingredients like herring oil, flaxseed, and barley make this a great recipe for dogs of all ages and life stages. Plus, this limited ingredient recipe is also safe for dogs with allergies to non-chicken proteins.

I have been feeding Carna4 to my 5 large dogs which is absolutely costing me a fortune. I also incorporate some Smack. As you can see, I am very serious about feeding my dogs high quality foods. I cannot contine to feed Carna4 as the company does NOT offer any coupons or frequent buyer incentives. I will continue to feed some Smack, however, as they offer great promotions & have a frequent buyer program. My question is; are their any other brands that offer NO SYNTHETIC VITAMINS?
Hello Debora. Thank you for posting.
To my knowledge, Carna4 is the only kibble-style dog food with no synthetics. There are a number of dehydrated raw foods, like Smack, that are synthetic-free, but do come at a higher cost compared to commercial kibbles. I wish I had better recommendations. With regards to Carna4 not offering coupons or frequent buyer incentives, we regularly have sales where you can save on your Carna4 purchases (make sure you subscribe to our newsletter!, scroll to the bottom of the page), and we also offer CPC Points where you earn points for your purchases that can be redeemed for anything on our site.
I hope this is helpful, Debora. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Brandon,I appreciate your post about quality dog foods made in CANADA. Being supportive of my own country I am in the process of switching my dogs from Purina Pro Plan Complete. I have a 8yr old Aussie with some joint issues and who may be a little over weight and a 3yr old border x aussie. I am hoping to keep them on the same food but do not want to break the bank. I was thinking of changing them to Canadian Naturals. I also looked about the GO brand dog food. My thing is I believe dogs need the grains in dog food and would like a food that has a full meat, with grains and can also support their joints. My borderX is still very active and my aussie can be too. I cannot provide them with a supplement to put on top of their food as they spit it all out. They can be a little picky. I would appreciate any suggestions you may have. Thanks

WANDA GRANT (she / her)
Hello Wanda, thank you for posting.
To answer your questions:
1. Both Canadian Naturals and Go! are excellent brands. Go! is a more expensive brand, so if cost is a consideration, Canadian Naturals may be the better option of the two. To learn more about my highest rated affordable dog foods in Canada, click here. With regards to joint support, supplementation is going to be the best path. While high quality dog foods provide great nutrition, they won’t provide enough support for dogs with joint and mobility issues. I hope this is helpful, Wanda. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
